Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that originate in the uterus.
They are fairly common and occur in up to half of all women. Most of the time, uterine fibroids do not cause symptoms or problems, and you may not even know you have them.
In general, fibroids only need to be treated if they are causing symptoms. Call your gynecologist if you experience:
- Pelvic pain
- Prolonged and heavy bleeding during menstruation
- Spotting or bleeding between periods
- Abnormal pain during intercourse
The primary treatment options for patients with large or symptomatic fibroids are interventional radiology or surgery. Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is the least invasive of the options, but not everyone is a candidate for this treatment.
Depending upon the size and location of the fibroids, it may be possible to surgically remove them while leaving the uterus in place. This procedure is called myomectomy. More often however, removal of the entire uterus (hysterectomy) is necessary. Age, medical history, and family planning will factor into your treatment options and decisions.
