Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases that are passed from person to person through sexual contact.

STIs are among the most common infectious diseases and there are currently more than 20 types of STIs. In fact, it’s estimated that over 3 million people contract gonorrhea and chlamydia every year in the United States—making these the two most prevalent STIs in the country.

If you are sexually active, you should learn more about STIs and what you can do to minimize your risk of getting these diseases and spreading them to others. Knowledge of STIs, as well as honesty and openness with your sexual partners and healthcare providers, is the best way to protect yourself and ensure your sexual health.
